Culture Shock
Sisters of Sizzle

By Amy Zavatto

"I thought of all those nights going up and down in those elevators," says Angie Pontani, reflecting upon September 11th, 2001. For The World Famous Pontani Sisters, the Burlesque sibling dance trio taking America in a thunderous tap dancing storm, the Twin Towers held a special meaning: Windows on the World was one of the spots they got their start, performing their high energy throwback dance act on Friday nights. Although that horrific day is forever burned into the minds of Angie, Tara and Helen, it only feeds their desire to entertain the masses, being the true gumption fueled New York gals they are.

Wearing mile high headdresses, grins as sweet as a cannoli and tattoos that would make a Hells Angel blush, the Pontani Sisters are an amalgam of 1950's showgirl meets modern day diva. Their power packed numbers-performed to everything from Los Straitjackets to Louie Prima- have become the Macintosh of many a Big Apples' residens eye, and now they've gone national.

Performing all over the country and on Conan O'Brien, the girls have also released their first video ("Go Go Robics", $15) and are even talking to Hollywood big wigs about a movie deal. But NYC is still their favorite stage. Cha-cha-cha on down to Marion's Continental on Monday nights for a little hip shakin', high kickin' entertainment - Pontani Style.
