The World Famous Pontani Sisters By Jonathan Warman Ferbuary 15, 2002 Drama ReviewHX Magazine
Imagine a dance act that combines classic burlesque sass with 50's-era showgirl exotica and precision choreography worthy of Gower Champion. Even then you will still lack a precise idea of just how fabulous The World Famous Pontani Sisters are. Angie Pontani's way over the top costumes up an already high camp quotient; for one number, you find head shots of Sinatra, Martin and Davis embedded in the sisters' feather headdresses (what, no Joey Bishop?). In a jungle-themed number, the leopard-print-clad sisters come screaming down the aisles with a sort of demonic glee. Their soundtrack ranges from Rosemary Clooney's "Mambo Italiano" to a loungey "Old Glory" that accompanies a timely patriotic number. The sisters have played all kinds of ultra cool parties, from Chi Chi Valenti and pals' Dada to the touring Los Straitjackets Rock-n-Roll Party, but I really enjoyed catching their act at Marion's, where nonpareil cocktails and fine food only sweetened the pot.
